MSHSL Baseball Bats: Important Updated

To Baseball Umpires:

1)  Two baseball bats that have BBCOR certification, and would have been legal for use this year have been decertified by the NCAA, and therefore are NO LONGER LEGAL at the high school level.  Note that it is only the specific length of each model as indicated.

      --  Marucci CAT5 33-inch model

--  Reebok Vector TLS 33-inch model

Effective immediately and until further notice, these bats are considered a non-compliant bat and subject to NFHS Baseball Rules 4-1-3b and 7-4-1a.  This information has been shared with all head coaches and AD's.  Make note of these brands, model numbers and lengths and carry this information with you to all games as a reference.  We will continue to pass on any updates from the National level.

2)  You are reminded that only non-wood bats with the BBCOR certification label can be used at the varsity level and that same standard should be used at lower levels.  Schools have been told that if they are using BESR bats they need to have a letter from your school administration stating that your district bears any liability for injuries caused by these bats.  Use of these bats will also create a unfair competitive advantage over your opponents who are using BBCOR bats.  MSHSL rules only apply to grades 10-12, but we have strongly recommend that schools follow these rules at all  levels.  Note that there is not a BBCOR certification process for bats that are not -3.  These bats (-5) for example may be used at lower levels.

We are relying on each and every one of you to strictly enforce the rules in regard to the use of legal bats.  Your support is critical tot he safety of our student athletes.

Good luck as you start up a new season.  I hope you have an enjoyable season and thanks for being an umpire!
