NW Umpires College Updates 12-24-2018

The NW College Committee and the Board of Directors wish you a safe and happy holiday season.  Included below are a few updates.  As always, please contact me if you have any questions.

·       I have included the most recent update from the CBUA.  A few of our members did not receive the update last time.  If you are not receiving updates from the CBUA please be sure to contact them ASAP to work through the issue.

o   Regarding hats, please wear your black NW hat for all games assigned through NW Umpires.  There are NSIC hats floating around that can be worn, if all in the crew, have them and you are working D2.  For games that are assigned through the CBUA please make sure you adhere to the standard described in the update.

·       The national meeting that our group will be attending is in Chicago (Sat Jan 19th).  If you plan on attending and have not registered yet, please do soon.  If you already know your travel plans (air, car, train, etc.), please shoot me a quick note and let me know when you plan on arriving.  We’ll probably grab pizza on Friday night – all are welcomed.

·       No Bank Ball (aka Dome Ball) this year due to NCAA basketball in US Bank stadium, so we’ll be at the mercy of our unpredictable spring weather.  If you are interested in preparing for the season in warm weather, Tucson, please contact Adam Berg.  The first games will be on March 1st and the final games on March 26th.

·       I will be attending the MIAC coaches meeting on Jan 17th.  I will have MIAC specific updates after that meeting.

·       NW Meetings – I expect all from this group to attend.  If you are unable to attend, please let me know via email.

    • General Membership Meeting - Save time around Sunday Feb 10th to attend.  More details to follow as we get closer to the date.
    • College Clinic will be held on Sat Feb 16th .  We will be back at Augsburg, like several prior years.   More details to follow as we get closer to the date.
  • Finally, over the weekend, the Oakes family house burned down.  This family has deep roots in the MN baseball community and especially at the college level.  Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.  A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist the family: https://www.gofundme.com/oakes-family-fire-fund

NW College updates 1-22-2019:

There are several important updates included within this message.  Please take a few minutes to read through and reach out with any questions.

·       Thanks to the 25+ NW umpires who attended the Chicago clinic this past weekend.  It was the largest group of NW umpires ever.  Great to see you all and it appears that everyone made it home safely.

·       Clinic: The NW College Clinic will take place on Sat Feb 16th from 9a-Noon.  Please arrive at the Kennedy Center (next to their dome) and prepared to start sharply at 9a.  We will try to be completed around Noon.  Due to the amount of rule changes and the Augsburg practice times being very early in the AM; we’ll only in the classroom this year.

·       Cage Dates: There are 244 slots for cage work before we throw a first pitch, outside in a real game, in the State of Minnesota.  Please start now in your preparation for the season and take advantage of these opportunities for betterment.  This is a requirement to be part of this group.

o   We have a number of pre-season cage dates that have no officials signed up for them.  Most immediate being 1/24 at the U of M and 1/25 at Concordia St. Paul.  These opportunities to improve and get in shape for the college season are open to all college umpires.  If NW Umpires is unable to fil the slots, the U of M, has informed us that they will go outside of our group to bring other umpires in.  Let’s prevent this from occurring.

·       There was another email sent out through Arbiter today by Adam Berg – Thanks.  Unfortunately, not everyone is receiving information sent through Arbiter (including myself).  I have pasted the information below…….

NW Umpires College Updates 1-13-2019

Please read through the updates below and respond where required, if you have not done so already.  As always, please contact me if you have any questions.

·       The national meeting that our group will be attending is in Chicago (Sat Jan 19th).  If you were not able to register in time and/or have misplaced your registration confirmation, no worries, you can register on site on Sat.  Thanks to those that have responded with your travel plans.  I believe I have heard from everyone who is attending.

·       Cage work – Starts this week. Dates are available for the U of M, Concordia St. Paul, and others.  There will be more dates posted as we receive them.  Log into Arbiter and find them on Self-assign.  Please be logical in the teams that you select.  If you are not working D1 or a constant D2 schedule, please do not go over to the U of M.  These dates are available for umpires working that level of baseball.  Also, these are just as important for the teams as they are for us.  It does them and us no good to have umpires who are not capable of working their level of baseball.  If you have any questions in this regard, please reach out to me before taking a spot.

·       College Clinic will be held on Sat Feb 16th.  We will be back at Augsburg, like several prior years.   More details to follow as we get closer to the date.

·       NW Umpires Association updates:  IF YOU ARE NOT RECEIVING THESE UPDATES FROM JEFF, THORUGH THE ARBITER SYSTEM, PLEASE LET HIM, AND I KNOW.  WE ARE AWARE THAT A FEW UMPIRES NOT RECEIVING UPDATES SENT OUT.

o   Update your address/contact information in Arbiter

o   A reminder of our Annual Meeting Feb 10th at 1 pm. Richfield Legion.

o   January 31st deadline for dues.

Since 2000, Northwest Umpires has been guided by the steady leadership of President George Drouches and Vice President Nick Schultheis.  As the 2017 season winds down, George and Nick are stepping down and handing the reigns over to new leadership.  We thank George and Nick for their sage wisdom and guidance for the last 17 years.  Our organization has a positive outlook for the future thanks to their efforts.  Please read the linked PDF for all the details of this leadership transition.
